One argument in favor of the estate tax is that it prevents “excessive” amounts of wealth from accumulating in the hands of a few families. But who is to decide what is “excessive”? Are we to assume that wealthy people are more likely to misuse their money or use it in socially harmful and destructive ways? If they use it in illegal ways, they will be punished by the government. But if they do not use it in illegal ways, why should it be taken away from them?

The other side of this argument is that an estate tax simply accumulates more and more power for the government. A good argument could be made that a more powerful, increasingly wealthy government is more harmful to a nation than a lot of wealthy families, many of whom often do much good for the nation through wise investments and business and through immense charitable donations (neither of which are normally done by government agencies).

So the questions about an estate tax ultimately boil down to the matter of who ultimately owns the property of a nation: individuals or the government? The Bible clearly takes the side of individual ownership of property.

My conclusion is that the estate tax should be permanently repealed.
